BUSY BUSY!

Things have been so busy for miss Katie McShady! I spent last weekend in Ontario, California photographing for the Rock the Ink tattoo convention, met a ton of amazing artists and people, and got to work for a really awesome family. Those pictures will be up as soon as I can get my head put on straight; I'm still recovering from that weekend, and that was a week ago! There's a lot of really exciting things in the works and I'm definitely keeping busy--always a good thing!

Meanwhile, to keep you all interested, I received an email from WorldWideRev today with a link to his video from the Phil Frost--Pale Writer show, and you can see me around 2:20, working behind my camera and being a goofball.

PHIL FROST PAINTING

Speaking of paintings, I can't believe I forgot to post about shooting this painting for Phil Frost! The guys at Known Gallery asked me to get a nice, hi-res shot of this painting before it was taken home by its new owner. Isn't it beautiful?! I absolutely love Phil's work. If you haven't had a chance to check out his work at Known Gallery yet, it will be up until May 15th, and it's absolutely worth going and taking a look.

BOB ROBERTS

There is a FANTASTIC book in the works from the guys at State of Grace that showcases American tattoo legend Bob Roberts. He is currently based out of Los Angeles, California and can be found tattooing at Spotlight Tattoo on Melrose. Today, I had the pleasure of photographing some of his paintings to be printed in the book, which has a cover that sports a quote from him: "When all others compromise...I don't." It was great working with the State of Grace guys and Mr. Roberts, and when I left, he handed me the newest issue of Tattoo Artist Magazine and thanked me for my help. It was such a pleasure to spend the afternoon with them! Here's a selection of paintings that I photographed, one being something that his son, Charlie Roberts, painted when he was a kid.

Here is Bob Roberts' bio, copied from Spotlight Tattoo's website:

With over 30 years of tattooing worldwide, Bob Roberts is known as one of the last living tattoo legends. On canvas, Bob Roberts works in the traditional medium of watercolor on paper, creating dense, fantastically detailed compositions that draw from traditional American tattoo flash, Tibetan thangkas paintings, and outlaw motorcycle imagery.

Roberts' experience as a musician (as a saxophonist, he was part of the milieu of Frank Zappa and L.A. lowrider punk band Ruben and the Jets, Hot Tuna, The New York Dolls, and San Francisco punk band The Offs), biker, and iconoclast flavors his personal work. His paintings have largely enjoyed an underground reputation among the international tattoo community and the Hollywood entertainment industry.

PHIL FROST--PALE WRITER

Last night was Phil Frost's show at Known Gallery. I haven't had a chance to sort through and pick out which images I'm going to be posting here yet, but I will have them up within the next day or so! I swear! By then they will probably be on Known Gallery's blog as well. But today I will leave you with two paparazzi shots of me, Katie McShady, doing my thing, as captured by local photographer Kohsh.

BL!SSS MAGAZINE--FREEDOM SHOW

At the beginning of this month I was flipping through BL!SSS Magazine's April 2010 issue and I was happy surprised to see my images as a recap for the Freedom show at Known Gallery last month. Unfortunately, they did not give credit where credit was due, but hey, you can't win them all I guess! You can head to BL!SSS' website and look at the magazine virtually to see my photos on page 90 if you can't get the actual publication. Thanks to Known Gallery's blog for the image below!

NORM--WILL RISE

Here's a tear from Tattoo Magazine shot by aforementioned Bradley Meinz. That's Norm, who happens to be one of my tattoo artists. He's great at what he does and he was so easy to shoot. He can be found between Spotlight and Will Rise studios in Los Angeles, CA. I'm looking forward to getting the tearsheets from the Emmy Magazine shoots I've been helping Bradley out on! We've been having a lot of fun shooting directors and their editors for Emmy Award-nominated shows like CSI and The Good Wife.

SAVE MY OCEANS

Last Saturday was spend on the expansive McCarthy Quad at the University of Southern California with the crew from Save My Oceans. I helped photograph their volunteers working and followed the Bag Monster to help promote awareness about how wasteful plastic bags are. Did you know that the average person uses 500 single-use plastic bags in any given year?! What a WASTE! It was great working for such an awesome cause, and I was able to photograph T-Pain and Clipse during their sets, as well as other bands, such as The Cataracs, who performed throughout the day. It was a great experience to work with people so devoted to their cause!
